Before you install the RHQ Server, there are a few things you must do to prepare for the installation. The following sections describe these preparation steps. Note that if you do not follow these instructions, you cannot be guaranteed that RHQ will work properly.
It is recommended that you install the RHQ Server on its own, dedicated box. Running it on the same box as other applications could result in port conflicts and may drain resources (CPU, memory and the like) necessary for the RHQ Server to run properly.
Before running the installer, ensure you have installed a supported database and Java. Make sure you know your database's JDBC URL, database username and password since these are required during the installation process.
All RHQ Servers, RHQ Storage Nodes, and RHQ Agents must have synchronized clocks. Clock variations will cause issues in resource synchronization, availability reporting, measurement collections and data, graphing, and importing resources into inventory. Refer to http://www.ntp.org/ for information on installing and configuring NTP to ensure your clocks are synchronized.
DNS forward and reverse mapping entries must be present for all hosts involved in the RHQ environment. This includes all machines running RHQ Servers, RHQ Storage Nodes, and RHQ Agents. RHQ does support NAT; read how to configure RHQ for a NAT environment here.
Make sure any hostnames are not mistakenly associated with more than one IP address.
The RHQ Server is capable of monitoring itself. If you want that capability, remember that you will need to install a RHQ Agent on the same box as you installed the RHQ Server.
